Braided Bacon Sticks with Sticky Whiskey Sauce

The sun is shining and I’m not going to waste much time inside working, but I really wanted to get these amazing bacon sticks up as soon as possible to be able to share my best kept secret with everyone.  They are brilliant on the BBQ or even roasted under the grill then brushed with the amazing whiskey sauce. 

Inspired by one of my favourite South African treats called a koeksister (pronounced cook sister) it is a braided dough which is deep fried then immediately dunked into a deep bowl of cold sugary syrup.  Utterly delicious but far from healthy and explains the multitude of health issues that I experienced pre Paleo days.

These braids are a healthier low carb high protein version using free range bacon from my favourite online farmer’s market Farmers Choice.  If you are keto or really low carb and want to avoid the sauce due to the maple syrup then simply enjoy with a low sugar tomato sauce.

Braided Bacon Sticks with Sticky Whiskey Sauce

Ingredients

    Sticky Whiskey Sauce
  • 1/4 cup whiskey or bourbon
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup
  • 2 Tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • 1 Tbsp grass fed butter
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1 tsp tapioca or arrowroot powder
  • 1/2 tsp garlic granuals
  • pinch cayenne pepper (optional)
  • pinch salt

Instructions

    Bacon Braids
  1. Lay 3 pieces of bacon on top of each other. (Follow pictures in the post above)
  2. Pull them as straight as possible.
  3. Stitch a toothpick through all 3 pieces to hold them together (as if you were using a pin)
  4. Spread out the 3 pieces.
  5. Starting with the bottom piece, start to braid the bacon, making it quite tight.
  6. Pin the completed end with a toothpick the same as the top pin.
  7. Using the long kebab stick, run it length ways straight up through the braid (like a popsicle).
  8. Set aside and continue with the remaining bacon.
  9. When all the braids are ready BBQ or pop under the grill.
    Whiskey Sauce
  1. In a saucepan add the ingredients, using a whisk give the sauce a good stir on a regular basis whilst cooking on a medium temperature.
  2. When the sauce has thicken transfer to a jar or small bowl and serve with BBQ or grilled bacon braids.
